An Herbal is "a collection of descriptions of plants put together for medicinal purposes."Expressed more elaborately – it is a book containing the names and descriptions of plants, usually with information on their virtues (properties)– and in particular their medicinal, tonic, culinary, toxic, hallucinatory, aromatic, or magical powers, and the legends associated with them. A Herbal may also classify the plants it describes, may give recipes for Herbal extracts, tinctures, or potions, and sometimes include mineral and animal medicaments in addition to those obtained from plants. Herbals were often illustrated to assist plant identification.

Herbals were among the first literature produced in Ancient Egypt, China, India, and Europe as the medical wisdom of the day accumulated by Herbalists, apothecaries and physicians. Herbals were also among the first books to be printed in both China and Europe. In Western Europe Herbals flourished for two centuries following the introduction of moveable type (c. 1470–1670).

In the late 17th century, the rise of modern chemistry, toxicology and pharmacology reduced the medicinal value of the classical Herbal. As reference manuals for botanical study and plant identification Herbals were supplanted by Floras – systematic accounts of the plants found growing in a particular region, with scientifically accurate botanical descriptions, classification, and illustrations. Herbals have seen a modest revival in the western world since the last decades of the 20th century, as Herbalism and related disciplines (such as homeopathy and aromatherapy) became popular forms of alternative medicine.

আয়ু’ শব্দের অর্থ ‘জীবন’ এবং ‘বের্দ’ শব্দের অর্থ ‘জ্ঞান’ বা ‘বিদ্যা’। ‘আয়ুর্বেদ’ শব্দের অর্থ জীবনজ্ঞান বা জীববিদ্যা। অর্থাত্‍ যে জ্ঞানের মাধ্যমে জীবের কল্যাণ সাধন হয় তাকে আয়ুর্বেদ বা জীববিদ্যা বলা হয়। আয়ুর্বেদ চিকিত্‍সা বলতে ভেষজ বা উদ্ভিদের মাধ্যমে যে চিকিত্‍সা দেয়া হয় তাকে বুঝানো হয়। এই চিকিত্‍সা ৫০০০ বছরের পুরাতন। আদি যুগে গাছপালার মাধ্যমেই মানুষের রোগের চিকিসা করা হতো। এই চিকিত্‍সা বর্তমানে ‘হারবাল চিকিত্‍সা’ তথা ‘অলটারনেটিভ ট্রিটমেন্ট’ নামে পরিচিতি লাভ করেছে। বর্তমানে বাংলাদেশ, ভারত, পাকিস্তানে এই চিকিত্‍সা বেশী প্রচলিত। পাশাপাশি উন্নত বিশ্বেও এই চিকিত্‍সা ব্যাপক জনপ্রিয়তা লাভ করেছে। কারন মর্ডান এলোপ্যাথি অনেক ঔষধেরই side effect বা পার্শ প্রতিক্রিয়া রয়েছে। যেমনঃ ঔষধ সিপ্রোফ্লক্রাসিন, ফ্লুক্লক্রাসিলিন, মেট্রোনিডাজল, ক্লক্রাসিলিন প্রভৃতি ঔষধ রোগ সারানোর পাশাপাশি মানব শরীরকে দুবর্ল করে ফেলে এবং দীর্ঘদিন ব্যবহারের ফলে স্মৃতিশক্তি, যৌনশক্তি, কর্মক্ষমতা কমে যাওয়ার ইতিহাস পাওয়া যায়। কিন্তু তবুও দ্রুত আরোগ্য লাভের জন্য মানুষ এগুলো ব্যবহার করে চলেছে। পক্ষান্তরে ডাক্তারও ঔষধ ব্যবসায়ীগন এসকল সাইড এফেক্ট পরওয়া না করে সুনামের জন্য অনবরত দেদারছে রোগীদেরকে এসকল ঔষধ দিয়ে যাচ্ছেন। তাই এখন এ ঔষধের বিকল্প ও পার্শ্বপ্রতিক্রিয়া মুক্ত হিসেবে বিশ্বে এখন ব্যাপক জনপ্রিয়তা লাভ করেছে। সৌন্দর্য বর্ধনে ভেষজ উদ্ভিদের ব্যবহার হয়ে আসছে, সেই সুপ্রাচীনকাল থেকেই। আয়ুর্বেদ বলুন আর ইউনানি ভেষজ উদ্ভিদের জয়জয়কার সর্বত্র।
